Bringing Joy back into the Math Classroom: Problem-based math instruction in the Philadelphia School District

Dr. Jessica Tilli is a Presidential Award-winning educator who has been serving the Philadelphia School District for fifteen years. In her current role, she serves as a Math Director focused on cultivating strong district partnerships, prioritizing family and community engagement, and working with school leaders to expand opportunities for math joy. She previously worked at William M. Meredith Elementary School for twelve years where she taught middle school mathematics and science for seven years and then served as the school-based teacher leader for five years, focused on improving mathematics instruction for kindergarten through eighth grades.
Jess believes deeply that every child, regardless of zip code, deserves the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in mathematics. She is a fierce advocate for creating access for students in Philadelphia and most recently led a team of educators to develop a Comprehensive Guide for Early Mathematics that will be implemented in the upcoming school year.
Jess earned a B.A., cum laude, in Psychology from Goucher College, M.Ed., summa cum laude, from Arcadia University, and an Ed.D. from Temple University. She was also a STEM Fellow with the University of Pennsylvania. In 2022, she was recognized by the U.S. government with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
